FERRARI HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP The weather was bitterly cold but remained dry. The FHC have not been to this venue for about fourteen years and the course, a mile long, is better than the previous one, although the surface is relatively poor. It looked quite fast on foot, but not so from the cab. A couple of straights, a chicane, two hairpins and some swoopy bits through coned gates is the make-up and speeds up to 90 mph for the faster Ferraris. Although Peter Hayman (512TR) and Richard Allen (360 Modena) had a big power advantage, it was no help for much of the start straight as both cars were nowhere near able to take full power. There was one practice and three officials runs. There were no incidents, except Hayman missing a "gate" on Run 2. You will note RA's strange time for Run 3, some seventeen seconds down. He had what he thought was his best run with nothing untoward and did not creep over the line as he had the handbrake on. The concensus of opinion was a time-keeping error. With the PEP's factored in Jeff Simpson got the maximum points - he always was good at North Weald! At the time of writing the next round will be held at Harewood on 12th May, the Prescott event having been postponed due to the current Foot & Mouth epidemic.
