ISRS : Monza : Ferraris 1-2-3-4
11.4.99

The second round of the ISRS took place at Monza, with no less than eight Ferrari 333SPs taking part.

Qualifying, however, saw the stunning debut of the new Lola-Judd B98/10 driven by Gounon/Bernard/Tinseau, which took pole position ahead of six Ferraris led by the Giesse 333SP of Collard/Sospiri and the Doran Lista 333 of Theys/Lienhardt.

At the start Eric Bernard in the Lola opened up a 13 second lead in the first 20 minutes of the race and the two Giesse Ferraris gave chase, although the R & S Judd of Caffi/de Lorenzi was following closely.

The Lola led handsomely until the halfway mark, when it lost a lap in the pits with suspension problems. It re-entered the race, unlapped itself and was fast closing on the two leading Ferraris when its gearbox exploded after 74 of the races' 86 laps.

This left Collard/Sospiri to lead home their team-mates Baldi/Redon for a Giesse 1-2, three laps ahead of the third placed Ferrari of Calderari/Bryner and the very privately run 333SP of Waaijenbert/van der Lof.

The other four Ferraris all retired, with the Zadra/Zadra crashing at Ascari curve and the others with various mechanical ailments.

Next round : Spa Francorchamps on 23rd May 1999.
