Coulthard to Ferrari?

The F1 silly season starts earlier each year….

Everyone will have read the recent flurry of stories about Jean Alesi returning to Ferrari in 2000 as replacement for Eddie Irvine. It was thought that Alesi would make another steady No. 2 driver to Michael Schumacher but capable of the occasional flash of brilliance which seems to elude Irvine.

However, a more plausible story has it that David Coulthard will not be retained by McLaren after the end of this season and is now in the running to be Ferrari No. 2. His testing skills are said to be good, his qualifying performances generally better than Irvine's and it would also be a good way of breaking up the impenetrable Hakkinen/Coulthard combination.

No doubt many more twists to this story will occur over the next months.
