Schumacher: More Ferrari Races Than Anyone Else by Niels Schouten
16.4.02

Michael Schumacher's start in the San Marino GP was his 97th in a Ferrari. This is the most for any Ferrari driver, one more than previous record-holder Gerhard Berger.

Since I like stats, here are the number of starts:

Michael Schumacher 1996-2002
97
Gerhard Berger 1987-1995
96
Jean Alesi 1991-1995
79
Michele Alboreto 1984-1988
79
Clay Regazzoni 1970-1976
72
Gilles Villeneuve 1977-1982
66
Eddie Irvine 1996-1999
65
Niki Lauda 1974-1977
57
Jacky Ickx 1968-1973
55
Rubens Barrichello 2000-2002
38

As regards total points scored in a Ferrari, this is the situation:

Michael Schumacher 1996-2002
532
Niki Lauda 1974-1977
242.5
Gerhard Berger 1987-1995
182
Clay Regazzoni 1970-1976
169
Eddie Irvine 1996-1999
156
Alberto Ascari 1950-1954
139
Michele Alboreto 1984-1988
138.5
Rubens Barrichello 2000-2002
124
Jacky Ickx 1968-1973
121
Jean Alesi 1991-1995
121

This brings us to the interesting bit, how many points scored per start:

Michael Schumacher 1996-2002
5.5
Alberto Ascari 1950-1954
5.3
Niki Lauda 1974-1977
4.3
Tony Brooks 1959
3.9
Giuseppe Farina 1952-1955
3.8
Froilan Gonzalez 1951-1957
3.7
Juan Manuel Fangio 1956
3.7
Alain Prost 1990-1991
3.6
Mike Hawthorn 1953-1958
3.4
Rubens Barrichello 2000-2002
3.3

So, what does this prove? Well, that Schumacher is an outstanding driver or that Ferrari have given him outstanding cars or a bit of both. Then, put Ascari in any old average Ferrari F1 of recent years and he would have finished second in both the 2000 or 2001 World Championships just behind Schumacher. And that Eddie Irvine missed out on Ferrari's best years when he chased the dollars and went to Jaguar - he scored 2.4 points per start whereas Rubens is now up to 3.3. Or maybe Rubens is the better driver, or.........

As always with statistics, you can show anything you want.....
