This year's Sunday Times 'Rich List' is worthy of perusal for motor racing fans, especially for Ferraristas as it contains three ex-Scuderia F1 piloti! The general trend is downwards, though there are one or two interesting exceptions.

The highest motor racing entry is, of course, Bernie, in eighth place overall with an estimated personal fortune of £2.32bn. The reason for the drop from third place last year is given as "revaluation".

Also falling are Ron Dennis and Sir Frank Williams. Sir Frank's drop's is due to "revaluation", but Ron's is given as a "profit fall" - I guess everyone can sympathise with that, as we all know what it's like when you get the builders in.

In fact, all of the team leaders have taken a drop with Dave Richards down £22m and Eddie Jordan down £10m, though with £50m left he's not done badly in his roller coaster ride through F1 fortunes.

A quarter of a century after winning the Drivers' Championship for Ferrari, Jody Scheckter appears in 443rd place with an estimated fortune of £90m. This is down £10m, but he's lucky to have ANY left having paid for two sons to go through the lesser motor racing formulae.

'Our Nige' (or Il Leone) has bucked the trend, his fortune increasing from £40m to £48, but he'll probably have to re-invest next year if Post Office Savings Accounts are phased out.

The biggest surprise is Eddie Irvine (remember him?) in 267th place from nowhere with a personal fortune of £153m. He is reputed to have made £40m whilst he was in F1, which he invested in property. Does the money compensate for the instant anonymity? Most certainly......

Although not in the main list, McLaren's David Coulthard made it into Scotland's richest 100 with an estimated wealth of £35m. Looking at Irvine, maybe he should view his impending 'retirement' not so much as an end but more of a new beginning.

Jenson Button appears 9= in the "Ten Wealthiest Young Sportsmen" list with £14m. However there's someone called Dario Franchitti above him in 7= place with £17m. Any clues where that came from?

Also, does anyone know what Dr John King's motor racing interests are?
