My Maserati does 205...
by Arthur Beattie
20.3.04------------------

.....but my Enzo does 217mph.

The authoritative AUTOCAR magazine has published an article comparing the Maserati MC12 with the Ferrari Enzo, on which they believe it to be based. They give figures which reveal that the Maser is bigger, slower and more expensive than the Fazza.

MC12 is bigger than Enzo...
has more downforce and is slower...
so Enzo is still the ultimate road car

The MC12 measures up at 5.1m (16' 8") in length, 440mm over the Enzo - less than ideal for Sainsbury's car park.

A 2m wide rear wing with spoiler produces more downforce than the Ferrari’s adjustable spoiler but helps to knock the top speed down to 205mph compared to the Enzo's 217 mph. Both are powered by the 6.0-litre V12 developed for the Ferrari though for some reason, with 623bhp, the MC12 is 27bhp down on the Enzo.

Its 0-62mph time is slightly slower, getting there in 3.8secs, versus the Enzo's 3.7secs, despite Maserati's claims that at 1335kg it weighs in at 30kg less than its stablemate.

AUTOCAR also reveal that the longer body necessitated a different carbonfibre chassis and body, while the push-rod wishbone suspension follows the Enzo’s.

The MC12 costs £475,000 (£50,000 more than the Enzo). Originally 25 were to be built but now AUTOCAR reckons there are plans for another 25 next year.

It may be just that the MC12 is primarily a homologation special for the Trident's forthcoming onslaught on the FIA GT Championship and racing needs have compromised its performance as a road car.
