Peter Collins Tribute at Shelsley
Report & pics by Tony Cotton

28.8.08

Readers of John Day's excellent article on Peter Collins will have noted that the Midland Automobile Club, custodians of Shelsley Walsh and Collins' nearest venue planned a tribute to him at their August meeting.

The Club called upon its friends to provide representative examples of the cars Collins drove and the programme gave a generous 12 page supplement with copious illustrations. Whilst there is nothing in it which will be new to enthusiasts, it is certainly worth a look if you can find a copy.

There were competing and demonstration cars, so not everybody was given times:

  • Neil Twyman drove a 250TR, achieving a 39.12 sec time.
  • Barry Jell demonstrated a 196S, which the ever-idiosyncratic commentary informed us was an original chassis, although it didn't have a chassis plate
  • Two Dino 246 F1 cars – both in 1960 trim – were in the paddock, one was demonstrated by Tony Bianchi on a 37.80; naturally, it sounded simply glorious.

I hazard a guess that the wonderful selection was sourced with the aid of Ferrari GB, not least because one of the demonstration runs in the class was Tony Willis of said company in a 430 Scuderia.

tt was right and proper and good to see that half a century after his death, this fine English driver's life was suitably commemorated.
